![]() ![]() Since the bolt pattern changes from 5x100 to 5x114.3. Which requires swapping the knuckles and hubs. Usually that involves swapping the rear end to match. It holds up well compared to the 5 speed counterparts. The STI 6 speed is the stronger manual transmission Subaru uses. (It's a gen 3 with a 3.6, turbo, manual!) ![]() It's not going to be easy, but it's not impossible.įind yourself some spare time and go watch Mighty Car Mods "Super Gramps" on YouTube. Or you can scrap all that and go for full control from a company like Haltech, they are really good but not cheap.Īs for the transmission, best option is always going to be a 6 speed STI transmission, they are very strong! Just make sure you get everything to go with it including the axles, prop shaft, rear diff, clutch disc, clutch cover, release bearing, flywheel, clutch fork, slave cylinder, plus the obvious stuff, clutch pedal box, master cylinder, shifter rod, linkages etc. The biggest differences are on the electrical side, it will take some work to "trick" the factory ECM to thinking that it can still communicate with the missing TCM, but jot impossible, maybe look for something in the JDM world. Try looking at a Tribeca for engine mount system as they still have mounts under the engine instead of being on the side of the transmission like the gen 4 Outbacks. There are some minor external changes to the newer engines but overall a swap would be straight forward. In Japan it was possible to buy a factory gen 3 with a 3.0 and a manual transmission, so its not impossible.Īlso, the 3.6 isn't any bigger than the 3.0 externally, it's all down to cylinder/piston size and crankshaft stroke. You will also be told that anything is possible with no limit to the budget. You will be told that it's a waste of time and money and blah blah blah. Many people will tell you different things with various opinions but that's all they are. If there's any changes that will get me similar performance with oem parts while actually being possible, please let me know. The rest of the project involves easy electrical and exhaust modifications, but I'm genuinely unsure if this part of the project will work. Completely disregarding price, is it even possible to fit a 3.6R in a 3rd gen, let alone get it to run? I'm aware the 3.6R was never sold with a stick shift in any car, is there any Subaru manual transmission that could hook up with it and handle the torque? ![]() My second goal with the project is to swap the stock EJ253 for a 3.6R out of a 4th gen. Is there any added difficulty to swapping on one I haven't heard about? I've seen people swap transmissions on rwd cars and a couple swaps on newer and older Subarus, but never on a 3rd gen Outback. I have a long list of modifications and questions, but my first goal is an auto to manual trans swap. I'm currently planning a huge project around my 2008 2.5i, the main goal being performance upgrades using only oem Subaru parts. ![]()
